I read with interest that dog wardens from Hyndburn Council in Lancashire are being supplied with night vision goggles. This will enable them to use covert techniques to catch irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to foul pavements, footpaths, parks and open spaces under the cover of darkness. I like their style…

Another action packed week, ahead!

Monday – trade exhibition at MOSI in Manchester all day then a campaign meeting.
Tuesday – work all day then canvassing in the evening.
Wednesday – City Talk FM doing the newspaper review at 8.20am, then work in the morning, a New Brighton Marketing Meeting in the afternoon and then the Area Forum in the evening.
Thursday – work all day the canvassing.
Friday – work all day then off to Pacific Road to see Led Zep tribute band, Mothership.
Saturday – working at a trade fair in Leeds.
Sunday – definitely a do not disturb day!

Good Feedback on Road Safety

Thank you for the emails, texts and calls suggesting areas of road safety concern.
One of my blog readers got in touch regarding the junction of Albion Street and Atherton Street. I took a look last night and it’s definitely on the list for consideration.

Another location suggested was the junction of Rowson St and Field Road. I’ll need advice on this one, with Rowson Street being a bus route.

Keep your suggestions coming, they’re all on my list for my tour with the Highways Inspector next week.

I know several of you got in touch with me suggesting the money is used to repair potholes. Potholes are repaired under a capital maintenance programme. This £10K is to improve road safety.

Road Safety – You Decide

One of the many meetings I attended yesterday was the New Brighton & Wallasey Road Safety Panel. New Brighton has £10K of funding to spend on additional road safety measures. In the big scheme of things, it’s not a lot but it could pay for a pedestrian refuge on a busy, wide road or maybe two Vehicle Activated Signs, the ones which flash up and tell you to slow down, which come in at around £5K each.

If you know of anywhere in New Brighton which could benefit from a VAS, pedestrian refuge, traffic calming or signage, I need to know within the next week, otherwise we’ll lose the money. I am out on tour with one of the Highways Inspectors next week, identifying suitable sites.

Obviously, any suggestions will be subject to inspection and could be affected by road width, bus route restrictions, resident objections, etc.

Please let me know your thoughts to make New Brighton a safer place.

New Brighton Shines at Wirral Tourism Awards

The finalists for the Wirral Tourism Awards have been announced and we have three contenders from New Brighton, in with a chance of a gong.

The Seaside Cafe has been nominated in the Family Friendly Business category. The fabulous Peninsula Dining Room has a nomination for Most Professional Waiting On Team and finally the new Light Cinema for Attraction of the Year.

Winners will be announced at the Wirral Tourism Awards on 1st March at the Floral Pavilion.

Best of British to those flying the flag for New Brighton!

Tonight saw the Licensing, Health & Safety and General Purpose Committee make a decision on the findings of the Hackney Carriage Supply and Demand Survey, conducted by Halcrow.
After a lengthy adjournment, discussion and listening to what the trade wanted, I moved that we went for Option 2, which restricted the amount of Hackneys on Wirral to 289.
There are currently 286 so there’s three up for grabs.
The trade were happy with the decision and it was pleasing that the Unite representative, Derek Cummins came over to thank the committee members. I even got a kiss! Does this mean he’s forgiven me for introducing a dress code, I wonder?

Telling It Like It Is…

I was amused to receive the following email from a council employee who had to endure one of the recent roadshows, hosted by Council Leader, Steve Foulkes…

Hi Sue
Just wanted to say how frustrated I was to have to sit listening through a poor and rambling speech by Steve Foulkes at the Floral Pavillion, where (as I knew he would) he couldn’t resist sniping at the coalition government. Worse still, the only politicians on the stage were him and Phil Davies; were local politicians from other parties invited to be on the stage but declined ? or was it all a totally Labour driven performance? My feedback sheet made interesting reading !
Was pleased that Steve can’t help himself from using the phrase “we’re all in this together” every two minutes !

You may be interested to know that the ruling Labour-led administration on Wirral has just spend £129,000 on a series of roadshows to allow Council Leader, Steve Foulkes to ‘engage’ with staff. Rather a lot of tax payers’ money to squander, don’t you think on a self-promotional tour? What a dreadful waste.
